Putting Off Procrastination - By: Georganne Fiumara, Posted on: 2006-01-08

Working at home can be difficult for a procrastinator. There is no one looking over your shoulder and there are so many distractions. It is easy to become involved with productive procrastination - staying busy with the non-essential tasks - and ignoring the critical projects. There are many reasons why people procrastinate. Realizing your feelings will help, so see if you can relate to any of the following:

Do you wait for the perfect moment to begin? This is common. Fill in the blanks: As soon as _______, I will _______. Unfortunately, the right time usually never comes. The only way to conquer this is to do it now.

• Are you fearful? You may be afraid and not realize it. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of becoming overloaded with work. Any fear can stop you cold if you let it. Let yourself feel the fear, acknowledge it, but do the job anyway.

• Are you a perfectionist? Many people have perfectionistic tendencies without being aware of them. If you would rather not do a project unless the final result can be perfect, you might be setting too high standards. Try concentrating on the process instead of the end product. One small step at a time can help you overcome the perfectionist inside of you.

• Do big, complex projects overwhelm you? If you don't know where to start, you might freeze instead of moving forward. Make a list of each small step you must take to complete your goal, and then begin working on one at a time. Creating intermediate deadlines can also help.
