Market Mom, Market - By: Georganne Fiumara, Posted on: 2006-01-08

What is marketing? It is paid advertising, public relations, direct mail, electronic promotion - anything and everything you do to attract the attention of your target audience. Where do you begin? You need a plan.

Few really understand how important it is to have a marketing plan when you are starting a home business. More fun than a business plan, a marketing plan can be started by writing just three paragraphs. The first paragraph should describe your business concept using a maximum of 50 words. This will help you focus and, if you memorize this concise description, you will be able to tell others what you are doing.

The next paragraph should define and describe exactly who you believe your potential customers are - your target audience. How old are they? What sex? What is the average income level? What are their priorities? Be very specific because if everyone is your customer, no one is your customer.

Once you have a clear picture of your target audience, the last paragraph will describe how you plan to position your product or service to best attract their attention. You want to slant all of your marketing efforts to reflect the point of view of your target audience. Instead of bragging about your product, you will emphasize how your customer will benefit from using it. As the old saying goes, don't tell them how good your grass seed is, tell them how green their lawn will be.
