Feeling Overwhelmed? - By: Georganne Fiumara, Posted on: 2006-01-08

Have you ever had so much to do that you become paralyzed and do nothing?

This type of reaction can be compared to freezing in fear as you stand in the path of an oncoming truck. Working at home is a great way to handle multiple priorities, but sometimes it just isn't possible to get everything done. Not knowing what to do first can cause confusion and inaction. So, the next time you feel overwhelmed follow these steps:

1. Do nothing. You need to take a mental break. Give yourself permission to take a nap, a hot bath or anything you need to mentally and physically separate yourself from the situation.

2. Review your goals and objectives. Do you need immediate income? Are your taxes due? Select the projects that will help you address those issues and put all other projects aside for now.

3. Prioritize the top projects. Consider the rewards or penalties associated with getting the job done or letting it go a few more days.

4. Choose the most important job. Then, concentrate only on that job until it is completed.

5. Make a list of all of the steps associated with the job at hand. When you view a project as a whole, it becomes too difficult to react to it. Include even the smallest steps on your list.

6. Begin working. Even if you are still fighting inertia, just do one thing on the list. Once you start to work, you will get the help you need from your friend Mo - Momentum. Once the big Mo stands by your side, the work will begin to flow and you will be on your way to getting the job done.

Before long, you will be asking yourself, "Why didn't I do this sooner?"
